>>> hello there. welcome to "newsline." it's wednesday january 2nd. i'm catherine kobayashi in tokyo. politicians and pundits have warned for months of the dangers as the united states pushed closer to the fiscal cliff. they warned simultaneous tax increases and spending cuts would push the economy back into recession. members of the senate passed a bill aimed at steering the country away from the edge. but lawmakers in the house of representatives say they don't like the deal. the senate sent the bill to the republican-dominated house early on tuesday. it would raise taxes on people who made $400,000 or more and couples that earn $450,000 or more. it maintains tax cuts for the middle class. the bill postpones by two months major spending cuts scheduled to start on wednesday. house democratic leader nancy pelosi called for a bipartisan agreement to head quickly to a vote. but house speaker john boehner said many republicans are unhappy and want to rework the bill. they're calling for more cuts to social security. that could set up a showdown with the senate and risk turmoil

>>> welcome to "newsline." it's monday, january 28. i'm catherine kobayashi in tokyo. indian military commanders have successfully test fired a submarine missile. they moved closer to being able to launch nuclear weapons from land, air and sea. the development organization announced the launch in the bay of bengal. the mission has a range of 145 kilometres. they are preparing to put a launch in service. last year they tested the ballistic missile. it's capable of reaching most regions in asia and part of europe. commanders have been trying to improve their missile capability in the face of competition from pakistan and china. chinese authorities have tested out a jumbo cargo plane made in china. it runs 47 metres long. it can fly nonstop for 7,800 kilometers. it can carry more than 60 kinds of cargo. state-runneme media says the airplane runs better than the jumbo model currently in use. the report says it's on par with a cargo plane used by the u.s. military, the c-17 globemaster. china is the fourth nation to develop a jumbo cargo plane after the u.s., russia and the ukrain

welcome to "newsline." it's thursday, january 31st, i'm catherine kobayashi in tokyo. israeli fighter jets have carried out an attack in syria. there's conflicting reports as to what that target was. the planes attacked a research center near the capapal of damascus. state media carried a statement from the syrian military. it said the jets targeted a scientific research facility. the attack adds to what it calls israel's history of aggression against arabs and muslims. reuters report the plane bombed a convoy. they suggested trucks were carrying weapons. israeli prime minister said on sunday weapons were flowing out of syria and that israelisust be fully prepared. he's concerned that syrian made missiles and chemical weapons may reach hezbollah. countries around the world have pledged more than $1.5 billion in humanitarian aid for syria. 4.7 syrians need help including millions forced from their homes. >> translator: it's freezing here. we get only one blanket for family. many people are sick. >> representatives of quikuwaitd the united arabs pledged money. >> there's no mili

'm catherine kobayashi in tokyo. >>> japanese prime minister shinzo abe wanted to make the united states his first foreign visit since retaking office. but he had to give up on that because of scheduling conflicts. so he's taking time instead to visit japan's neighbors. he'll head next week to indonesia, thailand, and vietnam. abe wants to strengthen cooperation among southeast asian nations. several of them are caught up in territorial disputes with china. and security analysts say abe wants to keep china in check. u.s. state department spokeswoman victoria nuland said officials on both sides are still work out the detail of abe's visit to washington. she said secretary of state hillary clinton will meet next week with japanese foreign minister fumeio kishida. nuland said clinton spoke with kishida over the phone and repeated the stance on the senkaku islands in the east china sea. clinton said the islands are covered by the security treaty between the two countries. nuland said clinton urged chinese and japanese diplomats to hold talks to resolve the issue. >>> now, before abe heads off, h

welcome to "newsline." it's thursday, january 10th. i'm catherine kobayashi in tokyo. a high-speed ferry carrying hundreds of morning commuters has crashed into a pier in new york city. more than 50 people were injured, two of whom are in critical condition. the ferry was carrying about 330 passengers from new jersey when it hit the dock. it bumped into the pier twice and ripped a hole in the bow. >> everybody went everywhere. >> the front of the boat hit into the front of the barge ripping the right catamaran or the right side of the wing and then it pulled up and the captain called out, screamed, call 911. get ambulances here. >> manhattan is surrounded by rivers and has several commuter ferry lines. in 2003, 11 people were killed when a ferry serving the borough staten island crashed into a pier. in 2010 some more people were killed involving a staten island ferry. 11 investigators have been sent to this accident to look into what happened. >>> the people who in china who report the news are making it instead. they ordered him to print an editorial by a state one daily. th
